The A4161, Castle Street, in Cardiff, was originally laid on concrete. Due to high traffic volume, the surface layer needed replacing due to showing signs of fatigue.
10mm SteelFlex, made with 95% recycled steel slag aggregates, was recommended for this project as it has a high resistance to reflective cracking.
In 2022, 1000 tonnes of material was installed and is still performing to high-performance standards. The carbon footprint was reduced by 20 kg CO2e per tonne of asphalt.
